7 Fun Ways to Celebrate National Puppy Day

National Puppy Day Celebration LogoIf March 23 doesn’t yet hold significance for you, it should. In 2006, National Puppy Day was started as a way to remind us of the joys and responsibilities of K9 ownership.

Founded by well respected author Colleen Paige, National Puppy Day is now recognized as an international holiday!

National Puppy Day was created out of a necessity to confront the worldwide problem regarding puppy mills and the conditions they provide. According to, http://www.streetinsider.com, there are “unfavorable conditions at the estimated 8,000 – 10,000 puppy mills in the nation.”

Poor diet, dirty and overcrowded kennels and a lack of proper socialization are just a few of the factors which attribute to the unfortunate effects of puppy mills. Puppies from these mills are typically taken from their mother’s care at a young age causing a multitude of problems.

National Puppy Day was founded in order to raise awareness of these issues and encourage the general public to adopt from shelters and other reputable rescue organizations. While store front puppy sales may draw crowds and be a great way to spend some time while shopping, the stories behind these puppies are often down right chilling.

Fortunately, we can all make a difference! Do your part by observing National puppy day in the following fun ways!

1. Visit Your Local Dog Shelter

This is my personal favorite as this is how I came to own my 11 year old deaf blue heeler! Even if adoption isn’t an option for you, the time you spend in assisting socializing these dogs will help!

2. Create a Funny Video of You and Your Furry Friend

Share this with friends and family via social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Or even send it to a contest! Be sure to take advantage of your new platform to give a quick plug for National Puppy Day.

3. Groom and Bathe Them

Aside from the obvious health benefits a good looking dog always attracts attention! This is a great way to break the ice and spread the word about National Puppy Day.

Whether it’s obeying a simple command or instilling a foundation for working in any discipline, time spent training is a great way to increase your bond.

5. Seek Out and Participate In a Dog Walk

It doesn’t necessarily have to be for National Puppy Day. You could participate in a walk for literally anything. The purpose is enjoying and exercising your dog while having the opportunity to share your story of companionship and bring awareness to National Puppy Day.

6. Have a Puppy Party

Celebrate National Puppy Day by inviting like-minded friends with their puppies to a day of fun and excitement. Enjoy watching them play with each other and maybe even spoil them with a new toys or treat.

7. Adopt a Puppy

This might not be an option for everyone, but if you have space in your home and life for a puppy, do it!

Hopefully, now that you are aware of the rising need to end the use and success of puppy mills, you can be more vigilant and prideful when observing National Puppy Day!  Even though you may feel your contribution has little effect, it is important to remember that the impact you make on the relationship between you and your pooch is what matters most!
