6 Tips to Help You Celebrate the Holidays With Your Dog

Holidays With your Dog? How to Enjoy the Christmas Season With Your Pet DogsIf you’re anything like me, you love including your pets in pretty much everything you do.

Going out to do some yard work? Bring the dog!

Need to take a drive somewhere? Bring the dog!

Holidays coming up? Include the dog!

I think you get my point… with the holidays coming (incredibly soon I might add) you may be at a loss with exactly how you can include your dog in all of the Christmas festivities. Today, I am happy to share some of my personal tips to help you celebrate the holidays with your dog.

1. Photos With Santa!

Every Christmas, millions of people all over the world bring their human kids to have their photos taken with Santa Claus, but did you know, that you can bring your pet too? It’s true! It has become increasingly popular for shopping malls to have a few days set aside strictly for parents to bring their pets in to have their photos taken with Santa Claus! Or should I say… Santa Paws?

2. Bake for Your Pets

For some people, baking and Christmas go hand in hand. Why not bake holiday treats for your pets? Head out and grab some cute holiday themed cookie cutters, and whip up some healthy biscuits for your pets.

3. Hang a Stocking for Your Dog

As a parent of human children, I know first hand how warm it makes me feel when I watch my children run out of the bedroom in the morning, and straight to their stockings to see what Santa left for them. I can also tell you, the same thing goes for dogs too! Fill your dogs stocking with a couple toys, but put dog treats in the top of it. The smell of the treats will grab your dog’s attention, and direct them towards their very own stocking. (Remember – if you leave a stocking out overnight for your dog, make sure it is in a place where he cannot get to it while you are sleeping.)

4. Festive Apparel

In my house, I love buying my human girls Christmas jammies, and/or Christmas dresses. If you have a pet, you can purchase an adorable holiday collar, or bandanna to help them get into the holiday spirit. My huskies have a different holiday bandanna each year, and they wear them with pride!

5. Take in All of the Beautiful Lights

Dogs love to look at bright, shining colors. It grabs their attention just like it grabs ours. Why not take a walk around your city with your dog and see how your neighbors have decorated?

6. Wrap Gifts for Your Pets

Believe it or not, pets can learn to open their own Christmas gifts, and they really love doing it too! Put some high value, yummy smelling treats inside the wrapping paper to help them understand that there is something special inside all that pretty wrapping paper!

Now that you have some tips on how to celebrate the holidays with your dog, always remember that safety comes before all. If your pet has a fear of new people, or places, it may not be a good idea to try and get photos done with Santa. If you plan on baking for your dog, be sure you bake healthy treats, and keep all of that holiday chocolate/candy our of paws reach!

Super ways to include the dogs in the holidays! My dogs would be very happy to have any or all of these things although Santa’s hat and beard together would probably be too much for one of my dogs.

Mary my dog has her stocking, she’s not always happy about the outfits though. Definitely baking some homemade healthy treats.

  7. I don’t do much baking for my pets, but I baked some pumpkin treats at Halloween and Ginger loved them!

I’m thinking we are going to have to bake some Christmas treats soon. :)

  15. These are great ideas, and a lot of these you can do for/with kitties, too!

I always warp my kitties’ gifts for them. :)

  16. Fun ideas. We are doing some baking tomorrow and have a stocking for Kilo. I think he would eat Santa (and his naughty list) but he loves posing for treats at home and goes all Zoolander as soon as he sees Aria who works with me and a camera or phone. We got some photos of him as santa paws. Will have to get one in front of the tree now it is set up and decorated.

  17. Those are all great ideas to do with your dog! But, due to my reputation for being, uhm, difficult, I don’t do Santa. Love Dolly

  18. Robin says:

These are such great ideas! I love it that people are including their pets in holiday celebrations more often these days. Cinco and Manna are big fans of helping me wrap presents and sleeping under the Christmas tree. :)

  20. I’d love to be able to take Truffle and Brulee to have photos with Santa, but since they don’t usually go outside the house, I wouldn’t dare try it. these are some awesome ideas.

  21. Christie says:

Great post! The holidays can be a really stressful and confusing time for pets, so it’s great to include them whenever you can.
