How to Intuitively Communicate With Your Dog

Have you ever wondered how your dog knows when you will return home and is waiting for you at the door, even when you arrive at different times and outside of a consistent routine? Do you feel like your dog reads your mind because he or she knows when you are thinking about going for a walk and they get excited before you have even said the magic words or picked up the leash? 5 Reasons You Should Never Tie Your Dog Outside a Shop

5 Reasons You Should Never Tie Your Dog Outside a Shop

Question for you: Would you leave your toddler tied up outside a shop? Universal answer: “No!” We’ve read the papers, we’ve heard the news: horrific stories of child abduction and murder. Most parents won’t take their eyes off their children, and with good reason. Why is your dog different? Do you not care what may befall him? There are five big reasons why you should never leave your dog tied up. 1. He Can Be Stolen Sadly, this happens all too often. Dogs can be snaffled from gardens. How much easier to take one who already has a handy lead … Continue reading

How We Helped Twinkle Find Happiness

Find Happiness: A Dog’s Happiness…

When I adopted my first dog who’d spent her whole life up to that point in a breeding facility, I really had little idea of the psychological damage that experience could have inflicted on her. This changed as soon as Susie-Belle arrived in our world and her trauma was obvious. Everything was alien for my little dog who’d never lived with people, never experienced kindness let alone love and who had good reason to fear attention from humans. Things that for most dogs are so natural were a big struggle for Susie-Belle to overcome: a comfortable bed was ignored for … Continue reading

Downward Dog? The Upswing of Yoga With Canines

Downward Dog: Yoga for Your Pet Dogs

Some might argue that yoga isn’t really a true exercise routine, yet still this workout regime has existed for over 5,000 years and some researchers have placed this ancient practice as far back as 10,000 years or more. Yoga is still going strong and recently this physical phenomenon has embraced canines into joining their humans in this popular fitness program along with one of its favorite poses, the downward dog. It’s being labelled as “Doga,” or the obvious combination of dog and yoga, is a newer way for pet lovers to experience the wonders of yoga with their four-legged friends. … Continue reading

10 Reasons Why You Should Walk Your Dog

Walk Your Dog: Benefits of Walking Your Dogs

Walking the dog sounds so common, so normal, like everyone must do it right?… right? Wrong. Did you know that somewhere in the range of 38 – 40% of dog owners do not walk their dogs? I know, I was surprised as well. But it’s true. Given a small percentage of those people I’m sure have good reason, but what about the rest? Here’s what some people have to say: “I can’t walk my dog because I work.” “I don’t have enough time.” “There is no where to walk my dog.” “He doesn’t need walks, we have a big yard.” … Continue reading

Why I DON’T Train My Clients’ Dogs to Heel

Why I DON'T Train My Client's Dogs to Heel

In the basic obedience classes I teach as a dog trainer, I don’t spend hours training the dogs to heel. I don’t even spend much time on loose-leash walking as a trained behavior. I simply direct my students to the smorgasbord of anti-pull gear at the local pet store (front-clip harnesses and head halters), and move on to other items on the curriculum, like safety recalls, jumping up, and leave-it. It’s not that training dogs to heel isn’t fun–it certainly can be, if we toss the out-moded leash-pop and use a modern training plan. But few of my students actually … Continue reading
